Smart House (1999)

Although it may appear to be commonplace now, in 1999, children’s minds were filled with wonder about what it would be like to live in a computerized home. That was the premise of Smart House, one of the Disney Channel’s first original films.

The film, which starred Katey Sagal, told the story of the Coopers, who move into a “smart home” that begins to take on a life of its own. Cheesy? Yes, especially by today’s standards, but it’s still a nice little snippet of what made Disney Channel original movies so special.

Ariana Bacle of Entertainment Weekly ranked Smart House first on a list of the top 30 Disney Channel Original Movies in December 2015. Aubrey Page of Collider ranked each Disney Channel Original Movie released up to that point in May 2016. Smart House was ranked third by Page.

Radio Rebel (2012)

For a while, Radio Rebel appeared to be an afterthought among Disney Channel’s slew of original films. Then there was the meme of Debby Ryan hilariously sliding her hair from her face, and there was a surge of interest in the film from which that clip came. The film was accompanied by We Got the Beat Week, a week-long lineup of new music videos and music-themed Disney Channel series and movies.

Radio Rebel is about a shy girl named Ryan who goes undercover with a radio persona that allows her to express her true feelings. Her identity is jeopardized when her school principal (Robertson) threatens to expel the young girl for misbehaving. This film was, believe it or not, based on a book (Shrinking Violet), and while it didn’t do the book justice, it wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be, and has become a cult favorite among Disney Channel loyalists.

Camp Rock (2008)

Camp Rock is a 2008 musical television film in the United States. It’s about Mitchie (Demi Lovato), a young girl who wants to be a singer, and her time at Camp Rock, a summer music camp where she meets friends, foes, romance, and discovers her voice. The film received 8.9 million viewers on the night of its premiere and is now the third most-watched DCOM of all time, trailing only High School Musical 2 and Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.

In retrospect, Camp Rock had all of the typical DCOM teen cheese, but it was one of the year’s biggest TV movies. It was so popular that it was shown on ABC, making it the second Disney Channel film to do so.

Directed by: Matthew Diamond

Starring: Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas, Meaghan Martin, Maria Canals-Barrera, Daniel Fathers

Original release: June 20, 2008

Teen Beach Movie is a Disney Channel Original Movie, which first aired on Disney Channel. It was the only Disney Channel Original Movie that debuted in 2013. On June 26, 2015, a sequel titled Teen Beach 2 was released.

Life is a beach for surfers Brady (Ross Lynch) and McKenzie (Maia Mitchell) – until a rogue wave transports them inside the classic ’60s beach party film “Wet Side Story,” where a full-fledged rivalry between bikers and surfers threatens to erupt. Brady and Mack, in the midst of a sea of surfing, singing, and dancing, inadvertently change the plot, and the film’s dreamy hero and heroine fall for them instead of each other! Will the heroes be able to get the plot back on track, or will they be trapped there indefinitely? Teen Beach Movie provides an endless summer of hilarious comedy and high-energy musical numbers.

Johnny Tsunami (1999)

Brandon Barker is best known for two projects: NBC’s One World (which many people may not remember) and the early Disney Chanel Original Movie Johnny Tsunami, which many Disney fans are familiar with. The movie was nominated for the Humanitas Prize in the category of Children’s Live-Action in 2000. Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board, the film’s sequel, was released in 2007.

Johnny Tsunami was one of the network’s early hit movies, and it tells the story of a kid from Hawaii (who obviously loves surfing) who has to adjust after his family relocates to Vermont. As a result, instead of being a surfer, he becomes a natural snowboarder. It’s a simple premise, but the film was a lot of fun, and its “fish out of water” story is one of the best the network has ever told.

Directed by: Steve Boyum

Starring: Brandon Baker, Lee Thompson Young, Kirsten Storms

Original release: July 24, 1999

Running time: 88 minutes

Stuck in the Suburbs (2004)

Do you have any idea what a pop star’s worst nightmare is? Being stranded in the suburbs without a cell phone. That’s part of the premise of Stuck in the Suburbs, a Disney Channel movie from the early 2000s starring Brenda Song (fresh off her Suit Life With Zack and Cody fame) and Danielle Panabaker.

The two play suburban adolescent girls who steal Jordan Cahill’s (Taran Killam) cell phone and attempt to return it to the pop star. This Disney Chanel Original Movie (DCOM) is unique in that it was the first to include a soundtrack, featuring some of the biggest pop stars of the time, including Haylie Duff and, you guessed it, Jordan Cahill.

Starring: Danielle Panabaker, Brenda Song

The Cheetah Girls (2003)

Before High School Musical danced its way into the hearts of pre-teens, there was no bigger DCOM movie than The Cheetah Girls. It was more than just a regular Disney movie when it debuted in 2003; it was an event, and it remains one of the best-produced original films Disney has made for the channel.

The Cheetah Girls, starring Raven-Symone and Adrienne Bailon, had it all: killer music, killer dance moves, and a tried-and-true storyline about just trying to make it big while maintaining a friendship. The Cheetah Girls, a four-member teen girl group, attend a Manhattan high school for the performing arts and attempt to become the school’s first freshmen to win the talent show. During the talent show auditions, they meet a big-time producer named Jackal Johnson, who tries to make the girls superstars, but the girls run into a slew of issues. Galleria becomes a full-time snob and forgets her friends, Dorinda must choose between her friends and the dance club, and other events threaten to permanently separate the Cheetah Girls.

Directed by: Oz Scott

Starring: Raven, Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams, Sabrina Bryan

Original release: August 15, 2003

The Proud Family Movie (2005)

The Disney Channel Original Movie – The Proud Family Movie is based on the Disney Channel animated series The Proud Family. It debuted on August 19, 2005, and served as the series’ final episode.

Plot-wise, the film was a muddle, combining Penny Proud’s upcoming 16th birthday with a scientist cloned from a peanut. Penny and her family are lured on an all-expenses-paid vacation where a mad scientist captures them, refusing to let them go because Oscar won’t reveal one of his secret Proud Snacks formulas. Yes, it had a strange plot, but it all came together in the end and is still a fun family movie to watch today.

Directed by: Bruce W. Smith

Starring: Kyla Pratt, Tommy Davidson, Paula Jai Parker, Jo Marie Payton

Original release: August 19, 2005

Running time: 91 minutes

Halloweentown (1998)

Halloweentown was one of the first Disney films made for the channel, and it was the first of four films in the series; some even believe it’s a Disney film that deserves a better sequel. The film, starring Debbie Reynolds, tells the story of a group of kids who discover a secret portal that transports anyone who steps through to Halloweentown – a place where Halloween is celebrated 365 days a year.

Of course, in a universe where Halloween never dies (Michael Myers would have loved it), the kids must battle all manner of Halloween evil. The plotline was a little too thin to be stretched into a series, but the original Halloweentown is widely regarded as one of the best Disney Chanel Original Movies (DCOM) movies ever made and for good reason.

Directed by: Duwayne Dunham

Starring: Debbie Reynolds, Judith Hoag, Kimberly J. Brown

Original release: October 17, 1998

Running time: 84 minutes

High School Musical (2006)

There was no bigger Disney film than High School Musical. One could argue that if this film hadn’t been a huge success, Disney Channel movies would have faded into obscurity. Instead, this film about a high school basketball prodigy and a shy transfer student auditioning for their school’s musical was the Disney event to end all Disney events.

High School Musical starred some of the biggest stars of the time, including Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, and Zac Efron in all his helmet hair glory. High School Musical would go on to become the most successful DCOM film of all time, with 7.7 million viewers when it debuted and spawning two sequels, one of which would be released in theaters (High School Musical 3: Senior Year), grossing more than $250 million at the box office in 2008. A High School Musical Disney+ show now has three seasons.

Directed by: Kenny Ortega

Starring: Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale
