The Simpsons

The Simpsons is an animated comedy developed by Matt Groening for Fox Broadcasting Company in the United States. The Simpson family, which comprises Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, is a satirical representation of American society in the series. The comedy is set in the imaginary town of Springfield and mocks American culture, society, television, and human nature.

Groening came up with the idea for the family just before a call for a series of animated shorts with producer James L. Brooks. He created a dysfunctional family and named the characters after members of his own family, with the exception of Bart, who he felt was a humorous name since it sounded close to “simpleton.” On April 19, 1987, the shorts debuted on The Tracey Ullman Show. The sketch was turned into a half-hour prime time show after three seasons, and it became Fox’s first series to reach the Top 30 ratings in a season (1989–1990).

Married… with Children

Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt created the American television sitcom Married… with Children for Fox. It is the longest-running live-action sitcom on Fox, as well as one of the longest-running live-action comedies in television history, alongside NBC’s Cheers and CBS’s M*A*S*H, and the first to be shown in the network’s primetime slot. It aired from April 5, 1987, until June 9, 1997.

The sitcom follows Al Bundy, a former All-American high school football star who now works as a hard-luck women’s shoe salesman, his lazy wife, Peggy, their gorgeous, stupid, and popular daughter, Kelly, and their clever, horny, and unpopular son, Bud, as they live in suburban Chicago. Steve Rhoades and his wife Marcy live next door, and Marcy eventually remarries Jefferson D’Arcy, a white-collar crook who becomes her “trophy husband” and Al’s sidekick. Al’s efforts are usually defeated by his own cartoonishly stupid wit and bad luck in the majority of stories.

Futurama is an animated science-fiction comedy that ran on Fox from March 28, 1999, to August 10, 2003, then on Comedy Central from March 23, 2008, to September 4, 2013. Fry finds work with the one-eyed Leela and the robot Bender at an intergalactic transportation firm. Groening conceived the series while working on The Simpsons in the mid-1990s, and recruited David X. Cohen to help him build plots and characters in order to present the show to Fox.

Futurama received critical praise throughout its run, earning 17 Annie Awards (seven of which were won) and 12 Emmy Awards (six of which were won). It received four Writers Guild of America Award nominations, with the episodes “Goodfellas” and “The Prisoner of Benda” winning. The series was a consistent performer for Fox throughout its existence, eventually becoming one of its flagship shows. It was Fox’s second-longest-running live-action sitcom history, after Married… with Children, with eight seasons and 200 episodes. However, despite avoiding cancellation, That ’70s Show did not achieve the same rating success. The sitcom began airing in syndication on FX, Freeform, Comedy Central, TeenNick, IFC, Nick at Nite, and TV Land in April 2020. It’s presently available on Laff.
