The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja.), previously known as the College of Arts, Science, and Technology, is a public university in Jamaica. In 1958, the Jamaica Institute of Technology was established. The College of Arts, Science, and Technology (CAST) was established the following year and was formally recognized by an Act of Parliament in 1964. In 1986, it was granted degree-awarding authority, and a governing council and academic board were formed. On 1 September 1995, the college was granted university status under its current name, and permanent provision for the university was made by the University of Technology, Jamaica Act 27, which became law on 29 June 1999.

University of Technology, Jamaica grew from just over 50 students and four programs in 1958 to become one of Jamaica’s top tertiary education institutions, with a student population of over 12,000 today. It now offers over 90 certificate, diploma, and degree programs through its five faculties and three colleges.

Northern Caribbean University

Northern Caribbean University (NCU) is a private, liberal-arts university in Jamaica that is owned and operated by the Jamaica Union Conference (JAMU) and the Atlantic Caribbean Union Mission (ACUM) of Seventh-day Adventists. With its main campus in Manchester, just two miles south of Mandeville town, and three other campuses in Kingston, Montego Bay, and Salem Runaway Bay, St. Ann, the university offers a variety of professional, pre-professional, and vocational programs in a spiritually wholesome and aesthetically pleasing environment. NCU, founded in 1907, now has an average yearly enrollment of over 5,000 students from up to 35 countries. It is part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, which is the world’s second largest Christian school system and is the largest English-speaking Seventh-day Adventist tertiary institution in the world.

Northern Caribbean University, formerly known as West Indian Training School, is Jamaica’s oldest private tertiary institution. It began in 1907 with only eight students and offered only courses up to the twelfth grade. Following a brief closure in 1913, it reopened in 1919. It was renamed West Indian Training College in 1936. It evolved into a junior college as its offerings expanded to include theology, teacher education, secretarial science, business, and natural sciences. It was elevated to the status of senior college in the late 1950s when it began to offer the bachelor’s degree in Theology, and it was renamed West Indies College in 1959. Baccalaureate programs in over twenty other disciplines have been added since then. The Jamaican government granted the college university status in 1999, and it was renamed Northern Caribbean University. The university currently offers graduate and post-graduate programs in the sciences, religion, business, and education.

University of the Commonwealth Caribbean

The University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC, formerly known as University College of the Caribbean) is one of Jamaica’s largest privately held tertiary education institutions, with seven campuses spread across six parishes. UCC was established in 2004 as a result of the 2002 merger of the Institute of Management Sciences (IMS), founded in 1992, and the Institute of Management & Production (IMP), founded in 1976.

Mico University College

The Mico University College (The Mico) is a higher education institution in Kingston, Jamaica. The Lady Mico Charity established the Mico in 1835, one of four teacher training institutions established during this period in the British colonies, and the only one to survive to the present day.
