Carnaval de Binche

Carnaval de Binche is held to bid farewell to the bitter winter and welcome the approach of spring. This event is one of Europe’s most well-known, and it was named a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003. The celebration has a religious theme.

The Carnaval de Binche, which has its origins in pagan ceremonies, began in 1395. (rites that were later merged with Christian celebrations). The festival lasts three days. When this celebration takes place, numerous distinctive and amazing costumes line the streets, marking the end of the chilly winter. Many individuals dressed up to follow the group and mingle with the audience in order to build enthusiasm for the event. Many people are dancing to the music and executing parade moves throughout the highways and streets. Apart from the fact that the participants dress up in bright costumes, they will also wear large white ostrich feather crowns and wooden shoes while dancing to the beat of the drums.

The Carnaval de Binche celebration is a colorful race in various costumes, similar to waking up after a lengthy slumber during a cold winter. Mimosa blooms as bright as the sun adorned the brims of women’s caps and the sombre chests of men. The members of the group donned unique outfits. People in the city dressed up in bright costumes drawn from old myths and danced to the rhythm of drums. All of this contributes to the festival’s vivid and colorful atmosphere.

Floralia Brussels

Floralia Brussels is one of the most famous festivals in Belgium. This spring flower exhibit attracts around 35,000 visitors each year. In the greenhouse of the grounds of the 12th century old castle Grand Bigard, visitors may appreciate the beauty of flowers spread out in a 14-hectare park (Groot – Bijaarden).

With millions of planted flowers presenting varied hues and beauty, this is regarded one of Belgium’s most magnificent spring flower shows. The Floralia Brussels Festival not only features an outside flower viewing area, but also an inside flower display space of almost 1,000 square meters. Floral arrangements such as lilies, daisies, roses, daffodils (astromeria), gerbera daisies (gerbera), freesia (freesia), red lilies (amaryllis), rum (calla), tulip… all crafted by the skilled hands of craftsmen from all across Belgium.

Castle gardeners must hand plant over a million flower bulbs in order for a new group of flowers to bloom. The tulip, which comes in over 400 types, is the flower that draws the most attention during this festival of colors, but hyacinths and daffodils also leave an unforgettable effect on visitors. Guests, however, are not permitted to enter the castle and may only wander around admiring the surrounding floral gardens. Floralia Brussels requires a lot of time and work to prepare since each flower cluster is planted by hand. Furthermore, floral designers have been working on this display idea for months in order to provide magnificent flowers for the event.

Visitors to the Floralia Brussels festival can also partake in a variety of other activities. Visitors may rest and enjoy the flowers with their families at the café shops on the property, which provide outdoor seating and a children’s play area.

Ghent Light Festival

“When the sun goes down, thousands of lights illuminate Ghent”

Belgium is recognized for its spectacular light festival. In Belgium, however, as the fasting month begins on Easter Sunday, regions or cities hold Carnival events, which are a distinct cultural culture. The festivities have distinct features depending on the locale. At the annual festival of lights, an LED-lighted cathedral with a magnificent atmosphere was lit up.

Built of wood and artistically painted with seven rainbow hues, Led Church is a mix of Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. It stands 91 meters tall and is illuminated by 55,000 LEDs. With over 30 distinct light performances and installations, Luminaire De Cagna has become the festival’s center point. This is the year’s most stunning light festival, attracting almost half a million visitors. A great crowd gathered to witness the Led light church and observe the magnificent light performances at the shopping complex. Light sculptures or strolling through a shimmering halo never fail to impress.

Ghent Light Festival alters its look from 7 p.m. till midnight. Around the city, there are up to 50 different light-based installations, sculptures, and performances. To see all of the exhibits, you’d have to travel 5 kilometers through the center. Ghent Light Festival is a beautiful setting for this event. The festival’s inaugural iteration took place in 2011 and focused only on the city’s historical areas. Every new issue demonstrates how the event has progressed. The celebration has now grown to encompass not just the city center but also the industrial regions.

The Bruges Ice Sculpture Festival

Thousands of tourists go to Bruges every winter for the sculpture festival, which features unusual and amusing ice and snow sculptures.

The Bruges Ice Sculpture Festival will take place in the heart of Station Square, roughly a 5-minute walk from Bruges city center, from November to January next year. The event is inspired by a different theme each year and it is one of the most famous festivals in Belgium. For years, the theme has been influenced by the Harry Potter books, Disney characters, The Lord of the Rings…

Visitors will be surprised and impressed by the magnificent works of iconic Disney characters produced using a mix of light and sculpture. During each ice sculpture festival season, individuals often employ up to 300 tons of ice and nearly 400 tons of pure snow to service the creation of works of art.

The sculptures are extremely intricate and gorgeous. You may even climb an ice castle, which will be followed by an ice slide back to the earth. You can have a drink at the Ice Bar if you’re thirsty. Wear warm clothing because it is chilly inside (plus or minus 6 degrees). Because The Bruges Ice Sculpture Festival is held on the Place de la Gare, it is conveniently accessible (think of the train). Adult tickets cost 15€ (groups, children, and other discounts are available). It is free for children under the age of three).

You may visit the Christmas Market as part of your visit. It is not large, yet it is extremely intimate in Bruges. On the Market Square, directly across from the town hall, there is an ice rink. On the Simon Stevin square, there is also a smaller market. The aromas of hot chocolate and food are intoxicating. The Christmas markets will remain open until the 31st of December.
